Updated layout and various tidbits

by Don on April 6, 2009

We’ve been pretty busy here of late, toiling on many things both seen and unseen to the nake eye. To wit:

  • Improved (and still improving) search. We’ve now deployed Sphinx to provide faster response times and more relevant results.
  • New ‘Change City’ interface. Now, instead of browsing a massive list of towns and cities in each Province, simply start typing the city you’d like to switch to in the form field. The autocomplete functionality will pull up the available results and, when selected, will automatically direct you there.
  • New content areas. While these are new and still very lightweight, the next push at troovy will be toward fleshing these out considerably. They are: Voices (local blogs and community updates) and Events (local happenings). Stay tuned for some great new directions with respect to content strategy around these and other pending sections.
  • iPhone application. No it’s not done yet, but we’re very close. I will announce here when it is available on iTunes. This is a feature we’re very excited about needless to say.
  • Some of you may have noticed some stray twitter posts over the past few weeks. Yep, we’re testing out some simple integration there, most notably the tweeting of locations troovy members check into. Nifty.

There are a couple of other things in the hopper that we’ll keep under our hats at this time. For now, it’s all about hardening the site, squashing bugs and getting quality content flowing through its veins.

As always, our eyes, ears and doors are always open, so if you have anything to say, hit me up right here.

2009. New year, new projects.

by Don on January 10, 2009

Like many others, we’ve managed to shake off the turkey and egg nog hangover and get back to work. Well that’s a lie actually, because we never stopped. While we did take pause to share time with family, there’s always more to do.

With that said, we’re very excited about our forthcoming iPhone app. We’re working closely with our friends at Finger Food Studios to bring you a terrific location-aware local search tool. If you’re the proud owner of an iPhone (and there are a few of you out there), you’ll soon have a number of great features at your fingertips:

  • Find local businesses near your current location
  • Check into troovy locations so your friends and followers can find you
  • Add reviews and new listings
  • and more special sauce type stuff…

Needless to say, we can’t get this to you fast enough, so stay tuned.

What else, what else? Well we’re rapidly closing in on 500,000 business listings. Our goal is to pass this number by the end of January. Of course we also rely on our community to provide updates. Consider this aspect of troovy as being the Wikipedia of business listings information. Further, we will soon be adding a ‘Closed’ button to each of our listings, so you can let us know if a business has, well, closed recently.

Finally, we’re actively plotting our strategy around blogger outreach. You know who you are. Tell us what a win/win is for you when it comes to sharing content, links, etc. We want to know, and we want to know now!

Up for air…

July 19, 2008

We’re here! After many months of toil and trouble, we’ve taken the shackles off and decided to share troovy with the world. Yes, it’s beta. Yes, it’s buggy here and there. So we’re hoping that as you find problems, gaffes, boners and bugs, you’ll share them with us. You know, so we can fix them.
So, [...]
